Insights from the Pixel Dump: Analysis and Visualization of Biomedical Image Ensembles

Abstract:

The increasing availability, resolution, complexity, and automation of biomedical imaging leads to huge amounts of image data which can no longer be adequately analyzed by traditional visual inspection. However, once we develop suitable solutions for (semi-)automated analysis, it opens up new possibilities for quantitative and predictive modeling. Using diffusion MRI, a modern neuroimaging modality, as the main example, this talk will discuss the roles that mathematical modeling, statistics and machine learning, as well as interactive visualization have to play in this context. In particular, we show how brain fiber pathways can be reconstructed based on how they affect water diffusion, how the results can be used to detect disease and reveal structure-function relationship, and how visualization can effectively support semiautomated hypothesis generation, as well as methods development.
