Team Wins Syngenta Crop Challenge 2019
b-it partner Franhofer IAIS was successful in the Syngenta crop challenge: Fraunhofer IAIS’ team consisting of Kostadin Cvejoski, Bogdan Georgiev, César Ojeda, Jannis Schuecker joined forces with Professor Dr. Anne-Katrin Mahlein (School of Agriculture of the University of Bonn) and won the syngenta crop challenge 2019. Since its foundation in 2015 the challenge has fostered cross-industry collaboration between agriculture and data analytics to help address growing global food demands. Participants in this year’s competition were asked to develop models to assess corn hybrids’ ability to handle heat and drought stresses. The Fraunhofer/Uni Bonn team met the desired cross disciplinary set-up of the team and delivered a cross-disciplinary solutions combining Machine Learning approaches and expert domain knowledge.
Fraunhofer IAIS runs a research school and competence centre for Machine Learning together with the Technical University of Dortmund (Competence Center Machine Learning Rhine-Ruhr, ML2R). The Competence Center Machine Learning Rhine-Ruhr aims at bringing Machine Learning (ML) technologies in Germany to a worldwide leading level. The ML2R Center is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as one of four nationwide Machine Learning nodes. Professor Dr. Stefan Worbel, b-it director and Fraunhofer IAIS, is one of the spokespersons for this center.
